Join The Masonry Society for the Masonry Educators Workshop, a virtual program designed to support architecture and engineering educators in incorporating masonry design and construction into their curriculum while strengthening connections between educators and industry professionals. This workshop will be held in June, with the specific date to be determined.
This virtual series is designed to help educators incorporate masonry design into their courses using practical, ready-to-use content. Sessions will focus on curriculum implementation, essential technical concepts, and real-world application. Participants will also be introduced to the Masonry in a Box curriculum, developed by Dr. Richard Bennett through a Concrete Masonry Checkoff grant provided to the Southeast Concrete Masonry Association, while exploring how masonry can be effectively integrated into engineering and construction-related coursework.
The series is intended to support both new and experienced educators seeking practical approaches for introducing masonry concepts into coursework.

Join Phil Ledent, Executive Director of the Masonry Institute of Michigan and Owner of Ledent Design Solutions, for a presentation exploring how loadbearing concrete masonry construction can provide an economical solution for your projects. This presentation will discuss several common structural design details and assumptions that have a major impact on cost and schedule of projects, and in some cases will negatively affect sustainability goals. This presentation will include actual cost case studies and recommendations for alterative designs and details to help promote economical designs of masonry structures. TMS 402 code provisions will be reviewed and applied to actual projects and conditions to help further the understanding of masonry design.
Join the Utah Masonry Council and the Block Design Collective for an engaging Lunch & Learn on designing with concrete masonry for energy performance and code compliance. This course examines how concrete masonry’s thermal mass contributes to energy efficiency across a range of climate zones and building types. It describes the role of heat capacity and mass wall behavior in overall thermal performance and outlines how these attributes are addressed within current energy codes. The session reviews prescriptive, trade-off, and whole-building performance pathways in ASHRAE 90.1 and the IECC, highlighting how CMU assemblies are evaluated in each method. The course also presents commonly used compliance tools, and shows how they support energy-code documentation for mass-wall designs.
