TMS Masonry Educators Workshop

Join The Masonry Society for the Masonry Educators Workshop, a virtual program designed to support architecture and engineering educators in incorporating masonry design and construction into their curriculum while strengthening connections between educators and industry professionals. This workshop will be held in June, with the specific date to be determined. This virtual series is designed to help educators incorporate masonry design into their courses using practical, ready-to-use content. Sessions will focus on curriculum implementation, essential technical concepts, and real-world application. Participants will also be introduced to the Masonry in a Box curriculum, developed by Dr. Richard Bennett through a Concrete Masonry Checkoff grant provided to the Southeast Concrete Masonry Association, while exploring how masonry can be effectively integrated into engineering and construction-related coursework. The series is intended to support both new and experienced educators seeking practical approaches for introducing masonry concepts into coursework.

LIVE WEBINAR: Inherent Fire Resistance of Concrete Masonry Construction

Join us for a presentation exploring how concrete masonry provides inherent fire resistance and supports safer, more resilient building design. Concrete masonry construction provides inherent fire resistance and life safety beyond building code minimums, without added cost or special measures. This course compares active and passive fire protection strategies and examines how non-combustible construction manages fire impact, including the functions of fire partitions, fire barriers, and fire walls. Participants will learn how concrete masonry assemblies achieve one-to-four-hour fire resistance ratings using the calculation method outlined in the International Building Code, based on aggregate type and equivalent thickness. A case study demonstrates how unit selection, aggregate blends, grouting, and finishes combine to meet different project fire rating requirements.
