safety

comes standard

peace of mind that stands the test of time

Safety isn’t just an added benefit of block. It’s a fundamental ingredient.
That’s because reinforced concrete masonry integrates strength, resilience and life-safety performance in one system. Its mass, noncombustibility and structural continuity provide dependable protection from fire, wind and impacts — making it the building material of choice in
unpredictable environments.

Always-on fire protection

Fire is one of the most destructive forces in the built environment. Reinforced CMU provides
inherent resistance to heat and flame, containing fire and limiting smoke spread as part of a
balanced protection strategy.

Built-in safety

CMU doesn’t burn or release toxic gases
(IBC; ASTM E136).

Safe egress

Masonry walls protect exit routes during
fire events.

Compartmentation

Walls contain fire and smoke to their origin and remain structural under fire conditions (IBC Sec. 703.2; ASTM E119).

Conflagration control

CMU construction helps prevent fire spread between buildings — a key benefit in dense, urban environments.

Proven reliability

Sprinklers fail in about 7% of incidents (NFPA); CMU performs without mechanical dependence.

Up to four hours of fire resistance

No additional treatments are required.

Why safety through
strength matters

Superior
Severe Weather

Protection

Reinforced CMU stands up to the most extreme conditions, including hurricanes, tornadoes and
high-wind events.

  • Wind and debris resistance:
Reinforced walls withstand winds up to 250 mph and debris impacts over 100 mph
(FEMA P-361; ICC 500).
  • Structural continuity:
CMU resists uplift and maintains enclosure integrity during high-pressure events (FEMA P-361).
  • Proven shelter performance:
A trusted solution for ICC 500–compliant storm shelters and critical facilities
    (FEMA P-361; ICC 500).

Seismic
Strength and

Stability

Earthquakes test a structure’s strength, ductility and ability to protect occupants. Reinforced CMU provides the continuity and shear strength to absorb and dissipate seismic energy — helping prevent collapse and safeguard those inside.

(FEMA P-2139 Vol. 3; IBC Sec. 2106.1).

CMU MAKES THE

GRADE

Each day, millions of students and educators rely on the buildings around them for protection. CMU delivers safety that’s structural,
not supplemental.

  • Fire containment:
Up to four-hour fire ratings maintain integrity under extreme exposure.
  • Storm protection:
Reinforced walls double as community shelters.
  • Ballistic and forced-entry resistance:
Secure assemblies defend against impact and intrusion.
